A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook the Greek island of Crete, 89km from Heraklion, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. It was previously reported that the quake had a magnitude of 5.9, but later the center increased its strength to 6.1.
The quake was registered at 05:08 UTC. The epicenter of the quake was located 75 km south of the capital of the island of Heraklion at a depth of 67 km.
The quake was felt in some cities in Egypt. No casualties or property damage are known so far.
