An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale was registered today in Romania in the Gorz County, where two moderately strong earthquakes occurred earlier this week, Romanian media reported. The regional administration of Gorzh was evacuated due to the earthquake, registered at 11:11 local (and Bulgarian) time. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 8.7 km. The earthquake was felt in the town of Targu Jiu, but the local Emergency Situations Inspectorate did not receive any reports of the consequences of the earthquake. A series of tremors were recorded in Gorz County in Oltenia District (Southwestern Romania) this week, the strongest on Tuesday, February 14, with a magnitude of 5.7. This earthquake was felt in the capital Bucharest, as well as in a number of cities in Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary. The tremor on February 14 was the strongest recorded in Romania in the last five years. A day earlier, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 was recorded in the same area. The director of the National Institute of Geophysics, Constantin Ionescu, told Digi 24 TV last night that as a result of the earthquakes since the beginning of the week, about 325 aftershocks have been registered in the Gorge District. Aftershocks could last a month, even two, the director of the National Institute of Geophysics said. He reported that 320-325 aftershocks had been recorded till last night. “This is normal activity after such a strong earthquake,” Constantin Ionescu said.
