A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale was registered this morning east of the French territory of New Caledonia, the US Geological Survey said, quoted by AFP.
A tsunami alert was issued in the Pacific island nation.
The quake was registered at 16:44 local time (05:44 Greenwich Mean Time) at a depth of 10 km, and the epicenter was located 279 km southeast of Tadin, New Caledonia, where about 7.5 thousand people live.
No damage or injuries have been reported so far.
