It is too early to talk about herd immunity against COVID-19 in Bulgaria.

Acad. Petrunov adds that some of the pharmaceutical companies have already started developing a third dose of the vaccine
In addition to well-known COVID-19 mutations like those from South Africa, Berlin, Romania and others around the world, a new variant has been detected in northern Bulgaria and the Bulgarian health authorities are now studying it.

In an interview with NOVA, immunologist Acad. Bogdan Petrunov commented that due to the great variability of the virus, a fourth wave of COVID-19 was possible and it could require constant development of new vaccines. The immunologist is rather skeptical when it comes to herd immunity at the backdrop of the current pace of immunization.

Acad. Petrunov adds that some of the pharmaceutical companies have already started developing a third dose of the vaccine, which is to be administered in November.

437 new cases of COVID-19 in our country.

53 people have died in the past 24 hours
437 are the new cases of coronavirus in our country. 6% of the tests performed over 7000 are positive, according to the data of the Unified Information Portal.

373 people remain for treatment in intensive care units, and 53 have lost the battle with the disease.

More than 400 have recovered. Nearly 2,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been given.

It is possible that our country is already on the plateau of the fourth wave of the pandemic. The forecast was made by the Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev. It is based on the retention rate of newly infected. The expectations for fast and high growth of the patients in September do not come true, said Assoc. Prof. Kunchev.

“What we are seeing here is optimistic. God help us to reach the maximum levels and even have a plateau. In general, this morbidity of about 350 per 100,000 will not create problems for the health system “, said Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev.

There will be new and stricter restrictions only when the number of infected exceeds 500 per 100,000 people. Until then, it will rely on measures that have already entered into force, which are not expected to be repealed soon.

“I do not see how in 2-3 weeks we will reach such low levels that we will release all measures – this will lead to a new increase in morbidity,” said Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev.

Among those hospitalized in intensive care units, most are still unvaccinated.

“One in 30-35 people is vaccinated. If you see deaths – in 40-50 people one is vaccinated and not with both doses. These are people with chronic diseases and adults, in whom every infection is severe “, explained Assoc. Prof. Kunchev.

The application of a booster dose in our country is not on the agenda, virologists say.

“Over time, the immunity fades and it may be a good idea to add a third dose. In Bulgaria, however, this issue is not relevant. We can barely cope with the first and second dose, even “barely” is quite optimistic. We can’t do it “, commented Assoc. Prof. Lyubomira Glomb, Head of the Virology Department at NCIPD.

The percentage of vaccinated can be raised only with a new vaccination campaign, according to Assoc. Prof. Kunchev.

“A professionally done campaign with a wide scope. We have to find the people that people trust, because obviously not the facts, not the rational is the leading thing in the case, but rather the emotion “, commented Assoc. Prof. Kunchev.
